Modelled on the original Alpha Industries MA1, this replica version represents great value. The original design dates back to the 1950s when it was created by the US Air Force for jet pilots. The jacket has the famous orange inner liner the originals would have had for helping find pilots if they were ever in need of rescue. The jacket can be reversed and worn inside out for this reason, and includes extra pockets to suit how it is being worn.
Now a well established fashion item, this style of jacket is still really sought-after today ever since it was made popular in the 70s. Favoured by punks, mods, skinheads, scooter boys, security, bikers and many more besides.
These jackets tend to come up a little small, so you may want to consider a size up from your usual.
As a guide, a Large size measures 25 inches across the chest from armpit to armpit. It is 29 inches from collar to waist, and arm length is 18 inches.
Please note sizes 7XL to 8XL are available in black only.
Approx weight of size XL is 740g.
Q & A's
Q & A's
Q: What size would I need to fit 52inch chest Tb?
A: I would suggest a 3XL or 4XL. As a guide, the 4XL measures approx 30" across the front on the outside armpit-to-armpit, but it is quite padded.
Q: Are these jackets fire proof?
A: No they're not.
Q: Which jacket this one or CWU49/P is the most suitable for Autumn/winter use on my trike.
A: If you're referring to warmth, then they are both equivalent, just different styles.
Q: is the jacket as fitted as the picture suggests? as other ma1 jackets i have seenn do not seem to be.
A: Probably not quite as much as the image suggests. Although it is elasticated around the waist which pulls it in a bit.
Q: just need to know if size 'Medium' is 42 or 44'' ???
A: A medium size would be closer to a 44" chest.
Q: Do the smaller sizes cover "Youth", age 12 or so ?
A: As these are adult jackets we would expect that even the smaller jackets will be too big for a 12 year old, however we do also do a kids ma1 flight jacket that goes up to size 11-12 years.
Q: what is the chest size of a 8xl? i am looking for a 60/62" chest
A: The approximate size for an 8xl jacket would suit up to a 60" chest.
Q: Could you tell me if this is machine washable?
A: The label says dry clean only.
Q: I'm looking for an MA-1 style jacket, but suited more for indoor use 65 to 70F. I think the Alpha MA-1 is intended for colder environments. How does the PILOT jacket compare?
A: The pilot jacket is of a slightly more lightweight material than the Alpha versions so would be more suitable, however both are really designed for cold conditions.
Q: Please describe the differences between the ALPHA MA1 flight jacket and the PILOT MA1 jacket. Also which jacket would be the most suited for summer riding on my Harley motorbike.
A: The Alpha MA1 is made by the Alpha Industries - the company that invented this style of jacket in the 1950s. It is an original Alpha and is of the quality you would expect from a company with a strong tradition of manufacturing military wear. The other MA1 jackets we sell are copies of these original Alpha ones. As a Harley rider, I'm sure you would appreciate the look and quality of an authentic Alpha MA1 jacket.

Goes the extra mile
Without the customer service in the shop I would have walked off with a medium, but small in this jacket is a perfect fit, showing off its design best. Quality workmanship and there is enough room for thicker clothing underneath, even though I am medium/large build.
Pros: Well built, Strong, Warm, Comfortable, Fitted
Cons: none
Sizing: Feels about right
Would recommend: Yes
